Gettin’ to Know

The storing of forage in a silo to cure into ensilage became popular in the United States in the s. To mechanize that process, the stationary silo filler was invented. Silo fillers started out as complicated machines which chopped bundles of green corn plants and piled the chopped corn into stacks to be elevated into silos. Eventually, stationary silo fillers were modified and simplified to a single-stage machine which chopped corn into the appropriate size and then blew the ensilage up a large pipe for distribution inside a silo, all in one step. This was the stationary silo filler as it is most commonly known. One of these companies was founded by Billy Hamlin in Lima, New York, in , and was organized with capital from members of the Hamlin family.

An index of the several hundred vintage vehicle photographs featured on the site. Master index of the vintage motoring gallery. The vintage transport photos in this section of the site are now spread over 18 pages. In an attempt to make some kind of sense of them all, I"ve listed them on this one page, in alphabetical order. Some pages feature several different photographs of a vehicle type, whereas in other instances, a variety of photos showing one particular type of car might appear in more than one page.

Hopefully this new index of vintage vehicle photos will help visitors to the site find pics of the cars, lorries, coaches or vans that most interest them. Genealogy research If you are researching your family tree or history, and have old photos that show motor-cars that need identification, by all means send them over and I"ll see if I can help out. If you have any photos like those featured here, and would be willing to share them, it"d be great to hear from you.

All types and ages of cars, vans, trucks and public service vehicles buses, coaches and taxis now feature here, but this is very much a"work in progress" section of the site, and it"ll continue to be built up as I find more photographs to put on, and more get sent over to me. Thanks to everyone who has helped out by either sending their own photos over to include here, or who have helped identify some of the vehicles shown in the photos. Vehicles that I"ve not been able to identify usually end up on the Mystery Cars photo page, until they are identified.

Industrial machinery is not like automobiles. New models are not introduced every year. Design changes can occur at any time. Many improvements might wait until older style parts already made are used. At the time these tractors were being designed, Ford Motor Company was using single letter designations for each new vehicle development project. Successful projects that made it to production such as the Model"A" and Model"T" are very well known.

Many projects never made it all the way to production.

The company"s roots lie in the farm equipment developed by Cyrus McCormick, which morphed in the early s into International Harvester when McCormick"s son merged his father"s business with other agricultural machinery manufacturers. Along with agriculture implements and, later, the iconic, Raymond Loewy-designed Farmall tractor, International Harvester got into the truck business, producing a diverse range of medium- and heavy-duty work vehicles.

They also built light-duty pickup trucks from the early s and the Travelall wagon from the s. When the Jeep"s no-nonsense, all-terrain utility stuck a chord with post-war ranchers, fire departments, utility companies and others whose professions didn"t necessarily include paved roads, International Harvester took notice and developed the Scout.

Until next time, enjoy the club! Randy Still Do you remember that kid in school that everyone called the class clown? The one that was always laughing and joking around? I mean that in a good way. Randy, is that the correct spelling? Randy, along with his two brothers and one sister, was raised in the town of Wakefield, Nebraska, which is about 35 miles away from Sioux City, Iowa. His dad owned a Standard Oil gas station in town and Randy often worked there changing oil, fixing tires, and filling up cars.

He also worked for some of the local farmers during harvest and doing other odd jobs. One job in particular was to walk the bean fields cleaning out the weeds and the remaining corn from the previous year. No wonder he can afford all those tractors! One of the neighbors had a John Deere model B tractor that Randy started driving around the age of 8 or 9. Randy earned a degree from that Junior College. After college graduation, Randy was drafted into the Navy and went in with two other guys from his graduating class, Tim and Dave.
